The news today that Oklahoma lawmakers have legislated that women planning to have an abortion must first endure an invasive ultrasound is profoundly depressing, to say the least. Anti-abortionists are delighted, of course, while the Pro-choice lobby is planning a constitutional challenge.
If the law stands, any woman wanting an abortion, for any reason, will first have to lie there while a probe is shoved up her vagina. Then she will have to listen as her foetus is described in detail for her, and, no doubt, she’ll be forced to look at the pictures of it as well. Astonishingly, lawmakers do not see this as being in any way torturous for the woman. Instead, they feel they are justified to force this upon any woman who dares take control of her own body.
There is always an underhanded double standard when the subject of abortion comes up. For the anti lobby, they’re supposedly saving the poor unborn babies for god. At the same time, they pray for – and in some cases, enact – violent deaths for those who perform abortions. What I find profoundly disturbing is that the perpetuators of this violence do not see that conflict. Instead, their eyes are filled only with visions of the glory of god.
And yet, there’s nothing in the bible that supports their stance. There’s nothing in there forbidding abortions or murdering abortion doctors. Not that these people would notice if there was. Fanatical religious believers are infamous for cherry-picking the bits from their book as they choose, ignoring the bits that don’t fit in with their paranoia.
All of which would be fine – if that paranoia wasn’t then inflicted upon the innocent. As this report mentions, the doctors are also protected from telling a parent of any problems with the foetus, or from being sued afterwards for not warning the parents. Are the legislators also going to provide funds and clinical and educational support for the sick or deformed babies born to these unfortunate women? I think not. Instead, the goal seems to be to punish these women for the crime of … well, being women.
Abortion is legal in the USA. Anti-abortion groups in Australia want the same kind of laws here. What fun. It will be interesting to see how long these laws last – I predict no more than a few months. They clearly violate the basic human rights of women, and no supreme court will allow that to stand – which is a good thing.
But I wonder if those who support the laws ever think they’ll get caught up in it one day. And how they would enjoy being violated like that – the men included. Especially if they got pregnant because of child abuse and/or incest. First you get raped by your daddy, then in order to get an abortion to remove the deformed baby he gave you, the doctor then rapes you again with the ultrasound test.
Just how inhuman are these people?
